Government Approves Nearly 19,000 New Jobs in State Sector

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Cabinet of Ministers has approved 18,853 new recruitments to the state service in a moveto address unemployment and bolster the state sector.

Earilier, the Sri Lankan government announced the recruitment of 30,000 graduates and youth to fill essential vacancies in the government service. 

This initiative is part of the 2025 budget proposal presented by the President, who also serves as the Minister of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development.

The new government has emphasized a policy of making recruitments to the state sector based on skills and qualifications, free from political interference. This decision comes in response to the substantial number of unemployed graduates and youth, as well as the financial challenges faced by the government.

Parliament has approved the allocation of Rs 10 billion from the 2025 budget to support this recruitment drive. 

An officials' committee, chaired by the Secretary to the Prime Minister, has been appointed to review the staffing needs of various state institutions and make recommendations for essential recruitments.

Based on the committee's recommendations, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved 18,853 new recruitments to the state service. 

The Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Governments has proposed that immediate actions be taken by the relevant ministry to initiate the recruitment process. 

Applications will be called for as per the recruitment schemes outlined under the "Programme to Recruit 30,000 Unemployed Graduates and Youth to the Government Service Proposed by the Budget 2025."
