Police Hunt for Gunmen in Sri Lanka's Latest Shooting Spree

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Police have initiated a comprehensive investigation into the recent shooting incidents in Weliveriya and Akmeemana. 

According to police reports, seven special teams have been appointed to carry out the investigation.

The incident in Weliveriya occurred on Thursday (13) night at the Araliyagasdeka Junction, where a man was injured in a shooting.

The injured individual, a 26-year-old resident of Udugampola, was traveling in a car when he was shot. He is currently receiving treatment at the Gampaha Hospital.

The police have deployed three teams specifically to apprehend the suspects involved in the shooting.

Meanwhile, in Akmeemana, four police teams have been assigned to investigate the shooting that took place on Thursday (13) afternoon.

The incident resulted in the death of a former assistant superintendent of Boossa Prison, who was shot while in his yard by two individuals on a motorcycle. 

The suspects fled the scene, abandoning their motorcycles in the Yakkalamulla area.

The victim, a 61-year-old officer, had retired in March last year. 

The police have confirmed that the weapon used in the shooting was a 9mm pistol.

Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
